Eleri -
I agree with Robert that a baby or pet gate is the way to go. I just wanted
to add that if the old kitty isn't much of a jumper anymore (like my 13 yr
old), place the gate about 4 inches off the floor. She will squeeze under,
but hopefully the bassets won't get more than a nose under it!
Good luck!

This is the easiest of easy to fix..

Get an inexpensive child gate ... put it at the door to your bathroom ...
you need to put it in the doorway so that when pressed from the hallway
where the hounds will be, they push on the gate, but the gate won't give
because its up against the door jam ....

Once you've proven the gate secure.. put the kitty litter box, and cat food
bowl in there.. if you have the room, put the food bowl up beside the sink,
if you don't have that kind of room, down one the floor is ok..

take said 20 yr old kitty, set into litter box, or in front of food *in*
bathroom area ... and let them realize they've got access.. :)

However, my dilema is "food" !!!!
Dogs get fed at regular times but I know cats always have their bowls
down all the time and just go backwards and forward when they please.
This is NOT an option because the bowl would be permanently empty...
