The purpose of the white tip on the tail is so the hunter can follow the dog
visually when hunting. While it is desirable, it is not required in the
standard. The standard says any hound colors, which is essentially black,
tan/red, white. CH Red Bay Johnny B. Good has TWO white hairs on the tip of
his tail . not visible from more than an inch away . and he was never
faulted for the coloration in the ring. He is a solid red (mahogany) basset
. he has a white blaze and white on his chest and paws, but his body is
solid red. Hoagie and Opie are open red and whites and have the most white
on their tails. Norm is a solid red and has about 4 inches of white on the
end of his tail, and Grady is a blanket tri who has about 3 inches of white
on his tail.

Color genetics are very complex and unpredictable . Johnny's mother Holly
had a small white tip on her tail and his father Morey had about 4 inches of
white on his tail. Both were solid red.
