Recently a good friend of mine put her 14 yr old dog down. He had cancer for
the last year and a half of his life-- a rather rare kind. She spent
multitudes of money keeping him going, doing chemo, doing radiation.
Whatever they told her to do she did, but not blindly. (AND this is NOT
about what she spent or whether she should have kept going as long as she
did so don't write me about that because I will absolutely explode.)
This is about the fact that because they were doing research and because my
friend was willing to help others, she did everything they told her to do,
kept the dog going  and when she put him down, she allowed them to use him
for further research on this particular cancer. PArt of him went here for
this study and part went there for that study and when they were done she
got his ashes back, and a footprint,

And here's what I think.
I think that dog left a bigger footprint than most of us put together.
He left a footprint for scientists to follow, too look at, to examine.
Sure, they do research, and they do clinical trials and no they don't use
your dog unless you give permission, and that's really hard to do, but it
means that because her dog left a big old biological footprint for the
doctors to follow, maybe when MY dog, or YOUR dog gets this cancer, they'll
know what to do.

They didn't know how to help Zelda. Maybe if I had looked around for a
clinical trial it someone else's dog would be spared.Maybe yours.
