BHP syndrome is devastating in its onset and acuity, as you descirbed.  
It can strike seemingly anywhere, and at any time.
The easy fix of treating the symptoms by acquiring your very own BHP  
to snuggle and spoil does create certain severe side effects, and a  
chronic condition of slavedom which can last, when ideally infected,  
for fifteen years. And of course, relapse is common.
Therefore, in view of the economy, the old concept of ZPG (zero  
population growth for those of you WAY too young to have gone to  
school when I did) is effective as treatment.
Method:
Access your local rescue website. Read stories of adorable senior  
bassets. Look at pictures of adorable seniors.
Hug your own dogs.
Volunteer at your local shelter and send donations for rescue.
Register now for your nearby Waddle event, to enable gradual  
withdrawal and aversion therapy (or attraction therapy) by repeated  
exposure in short and manageable doses to other adorable bassets,  
young or old.
With careful treatment, your symptoms will resolve with no ill  
aftereffects.
