For many many years, all our hounds have eaten Purina Dog Chow and they do
just great on it.  The adult boys usually get 1-1/2 or 2 cups twice a
day.  Adult girls get 1 or 1-1/2 cups.  We adjust the amount
according to the dog's weight.  Bigger girls like Purple who is very
active might get more than smaller ones like Ruth.  Usually everybody
gets a tiny bit more in winter.

Anna has a corn sensitivity so
she gets Nutro lamb and rice in about the same amount.

It is my
experience that many basset boys just do not put on weight as
youngsters.  They don't sit still long enough to store any
calories.  While in the very active and still growing stage, I'll
give my young boys all they want twice a day.  I also let them
eat  "competitively" (2 or 3 youngsters from the same large
flat puppy pan) at that age to encourage them to chow down.

Bassets are like people.  They have diferent metabolisms.  To
acheive or maintain appropriate weight, two  dogs of the same age and
size may need very different amounts of the same food.  I've had a
few (girls, always) who are already on weight control diet quantity by the
time they are 4 months old.
