With all the passing hounds, it is sad to hear their stories of love and
courage.. Just as sad are all the hounds in need. So as we celebrate the
lives of our cared for hounds; let's also celebrate the saving of hounds
who have not seen the caring of a kind hand, or the love of a person.
We rescued a little girl (7 years young).. from being chained outside in
the Iowa winters. Nothing but a crate with a tarp over it and chained to
a pole. Her owners came to the farm on the weekends or at least Fridays
they tell me to feed her. Her water frozen, her food mirky from being in
the elements all week.
When we got her, we thought she was going to bite us. All the way to the
vet, we discussed what we might have to do... and both of us were
avoiding the answer. She came out of the car and went into the vet. I
warned them of her possible aggressiveness.

When I picked her up, they had a laundry list of things wrong with her.
Mammary gland issues, dental issues, ear infection, hook worms, growths
on her body, heart murmur.. the list went on and on.. but I did see a
tail wag oh so lightly. I took her home and she hid in the corner on a
bed (she found the bed)... and over the afternoon, saw her slowly
respond to me. By the next day, she wanted to play with my boys. She has
no idea of housetraining which will be her biggest challenge to becoming
an owned pet..
But she will make it. We has learned to love again and doesn't want to
go outside ever again.(which is why the housetraining is hard).. but she
is now in our BEST foster home and they are committed to helping her..
after seeing where she lived for so long..

And she has shown no aggression whatsoever in treats, food, etc. I was
relieved to say the least.

This is what rescue is all about.. After reading the poem from Alabama
of the dog left behind in the shelter, I couldn't sleep last night. So
far, I haven't left one behind and dread the day I would have to make
that decision. I pray that I don't have to do that..
