Basset ears are most decidedly NOT long at birth.  they start out as
little equilateral triangles set on just at or below eye level.  They
then proceed to grow faster than anything else except maybe appetite until
they reach maximum ear to body length at about 12 weeks.  Then the
body catches up a bit.  All novice breeders should be warned of this
as it can be rather shocking.

Leg length at birth might be a
better hint.  got any photos?
