Diane,

My Kaylee has had this for over a year. I first noticed the cloudiness in
Spring, 2008, but attributed it to her age - she will be 12 this
September. Her regular vet was concerned, so he prescribed drops for a
month and when that did nothing noticeable, he referred Kaylee to an
opthalmologist. Kaylee has been seeing her eye doctor for over a year
now.

I'm afraid your friend's vet might be wrong about the pain. Left
untreated, the condition produces ulcers on the corneas that can be quite
painful. Kaylee's eyes had progressed to ulcers when she first saw the
eye doctor. She prescribed several eye drops to heal the ulcers, but it
took about 6 months to get them all healed. She offered pain medicine if
I thought she was in terrible pain, but I did not ever really think it was
necessary, so we skipped that part. Still, she took drops for many months
- 3 different kinds - 3 and 4 times a day!

Now that the ulcers are healed, she is only getting 5% Sodium Chloride
drops twice a day. You can buy them over the counter at the human
pharmacy. They are basically adding salt to her eyes to draw out the
moisture to prevent further ulcers. This is completely unrelated to
glaucoma and the eye doctor has not been concerned about it any more than
she would with any other basset.

A trip to an eye specialist is definitely in order for your friend.

Beth, Abby, Kaylee and Rosie
