I did say that in weather when I wouldn't leave them in the yard, I obviously wouldn't leave anyone in the car for any period. I have sat in the van, as described, for a couple of hours myself with Kahuna at dog shows. It is like sitting under a tent. Did the people that left the windows part way open also screen the windows and have ice water available? Having reflective or mesh screens on all the windows (windshield and open windows) makes a HUGE difference and with the sunroof open and screened the warmest air vents out the top while blocking direct sun - warm air rises. I wouldn't go into a movie for hours like that, but to run into the store or post office, sure. Sometimes, even if it's undesirable, tasks need to be combined and if the dogs have a class or vet appt, they come along. All the single people know you do the best you can, but there are only so many hours after work to what needs to be done.

<<My van has windows that open in the sliders, not just the front, so I open
those as far as they go - half way, the vents in the back, sun roof and
front windows half way. >>

Just a warning. The police told us of a case where the people had left the
windows halfway open. When the cops got there, their dog was already dead.
Sometimes people cannot tell how hot it's going to get. It's risky to leave
dogs in cars. And of course it depend on how long the dog is left. I guess
that the guy we "rescued" was in that SUV for at least half an hour. In
another 15 minutes, he might have been dead.

I also think this dog did so well because he was quite young, but not a
little puppy. My guys are older, and I'd hesitate to risk it.

None of us can take risks for others, but I know that in this weather, my
hounds stay home or go in the store with me.
