HEART TO HEART FUNDRAISER FOR HOUNDS HAVEN BASSET RESCUE
PLEASE HELP US CROSSPOSTING IS MUCH APPRECIATED

Hounds Haven Basset Rescue is hosting it's Heart to Heart Fundraiser. We
have recently had an un staggering number of Heart Worm Positive Basset's
come into rescue and we need your help in raising funds to cover the medical
costs. As we all know the prospective costs of a single HW treatment is
anywhere from $200-$300. And even though we have been graced with wonderful
vets willing to offer us substantial discounts on the cost of the HW
treatment, this cost does not even include the normal routine vetting we
give the hound, I.e. Vaccinations, de-worming, and altering, which cost an
additional $150-$175. Their adoption fees barely cover the minimal vetting
expenses. In addition to being HW + a few of these houndies have other
medical issues being caused by the Heart Worm parasite and are needing
extensive vetting before they are ready to be placed up for adoption. A few
of their stories:

Bohdi~He was an owner surrender to rescue in March. She was no longer able
to afford Bohdi's care due to the hard economic times. We were initially
told he had an anal gland infection. But upon arriving to rescue it was
clear Bohdi had many many more medical concerns. His toenails were so long
they were starting to curl into his pads. His anal glands were severely
infected, he was obese and seemed to have troubles walking. Upon his initial
vet examination it was discovered Bohdi was a strong HW positive, he has a
mass on his heart, he has a pinched nerve in his spinal column causing his
back feet to turn under as he walks and he is not able to fully correct them
to their normal position. He has a low thyroid activity level. He is obese
and needs to loose 15-20 lbs. But through all these medical concerns Bohdi
is the happiest 10 year old Basset boy out there. He is loosing weight,
which seems to be improving his leg function. He has underwent his HW
treatment and is being treated for the thyroid issue, which we are thinking
is a said effect of the HW's. But his medical care is far from over. He will
need to be seen by a specialist to asses the mass on his heart and have his
thyroid levels rechecked frequently and he has yet to be altered. As we all
know placing senior hounds is never a fast going process and one that will
need extended medical care in any new home he is placed in even harder.

Mable & Wesmar~ Both were pulled from euthanizing shelters and it was
discovered they both has HW's. Wesmar has since been adopted to a loving
forever home and is thriving, but his adoption fee did not cover the costs
of his HW treatment. Mable has just entered rescue and goes for her HW
treatment on 5-20-09, she has come down with a ragging case of kennel cough
delaying the start of her treatment.

Kacee~Kacee was one of 7 breeder release kiddos from Northeast MO. She has
been a breeding female her whole 7 years of life and is finally leaning the
finer things of home living, grass under her feet and a warm kind hand to
love her. She has microflaria, which in our terms means she has HW's really
bad. She has probably had them for years and has been bred, carried and
delivered puppies multiple times all while having HW's :0(

Eva & Jake(now LL Bean)~Both found wondering at large in cities in southern
MO. Both brought right into rescue where we discovered they had HW's :0( Eva
has been adopted to a loving home...LL Bean however was recently returned to
rescue suffering from severe separation anxiety. He tried to escape his wire
crate and caused so much damage to his nose the wounds almost reach the bone
When his mom got home and found him she noticed live worms coming out of
his wounds from the HW's :0( He is now being re-evaluated medically and
doing well on some new medication!
