[Dailydrool] Boogie and Buster Need Your Spare Drool

On Saturday, a bonded pair of 7 year old bassets were dumped at Miami animal control by a man. Since the bassets were registered to his wife and she wasn't there to sign the owner relinquish papers, they were listed as strays and I got a call asking if I would take them in. Of course I said yes and was scheduled to pick them up when their stray hold was up next Saturday.

This morning I got a call from the animal control saying please come get them right away. They found both of these beautiful boys lying is puddles of bloody diarrhea and vomit this morning. The director of animal control called the woman and told her she needed to formally relinquish them right now because they wouldn't live to see next Saturday if they didn't get medical care right away.

I left work and went and got Boogie and Buster. They were so pitiful. They hadn't eaten since they arrived on Saturday so they were vomiting up bile. We still don't know what the bloody diarrhea is about but it is almost pure blood at this point. I rushed them to our vets where they are being cared for now.

I have a feeling that we are going to need lots of drool for Boogie and Buster. I rarely leave the rescues at the vet's office because I can give them care through the night but this time I know it was the right thing to do. I still can't shake the bad feeling I had when I left though.

What is especially sad is that it appears that this is a pair of 7 year old bonded basset boys that will need to go to a home together. How many people are out there that will even consider one seven year old, much less two? About 12 of the 15 we have in rescue right now are considered seniors - what about them? I guess we'll worry about that once they make it through this crisis.
