I don't have any experience with diabetic surgery, but hubby and I are both diabetics and I know one of the things that immediately came to mind was that diabetics sometimes have difficulty healing.  I would imagine it applies to dogs as much as humans.  Your decision is not an easy one.  I wish you and your girl all the best.
