[Dailydrool] Tick season

I was petting Elvis last night when I saw what I first thought was skin tag near his ear. It was a Tick! Looked like a grey sunflower seed ( without the shell). CREEPY!! First time for us ever. We do live in the boonies but have never had one. The vet advised pulling it out as close to his skin as I could get with tweezers and putting neosporin on the area after. Elvis ( and the tick in a baggie) went to the vet today. Elvis is getting a dental and while he is out they will remove the tick's head which remained behind last night. The tick went along for identification only. She did comment that it was early to be seeing ticks- so be warned... tick season appears to be on.

I do use a flea/tick preventative- but it is due today. She said as they only repel ticks for about 4 weeks it is likely that it 'bit' as it was the end of the month cycle for the preventative.

Some websites my mom looked up said if the head did not come out, the body would likely reject it via infection or abcess and not to fret over it. And to wash ones hands very well after removal as disease could be spread just by touching the tick if it was infected with a disease. Flushing a tick ( or even just parts of it) down the toilet will not kill it. It says to burn them.

YUCK!

droolies, Angelika ( who is trying to pass the time until I can call the vet to see how he is doing....)
