You really do not need to be so hard on your self,you did the right thing to free him from agony and pain. When My Bubba was diagnosed with lymphosarcoma at age three I promised him I would not allow him to suffer, that is the best we can do for them. It is ok not to know what to say to someone who has lost a basset( or any other animal)a simple, "I'm sorry ",gets the point across. You have a good heart. Take Care,Vickie Zehring
