[Dailydrool] The value of opthalmologists

<<Our Lucy was diagnosed with glaucoma in early July, but only after a week
of treatment for a scratched cornea at our our regular vet practice and
then a
referral to a very pricey, far-distant veterinary ophthalmologist.>>

Thankfully, we have never had to deal with glaucoma in our bassets. But
Belvedere has had other eye problems for a number of years, and I am so glad
that we went to an opthalmologist, because I believe he has helped Bel keep
his sight as long as possible. I was also certain, as soon as we had visited
this vet, that glaucoma was not the problem. I doubt I could have paid
enough for that peace of mind.

At this point, Bel's sight is very limited, due to edema in his eyes. But I
know that I've done all I can for him. Yes, Dr. Brown is not cheap, but he
has been very helpful. I would encourage those whose dogs have eye trouble
to ask for a referral to a good eye specialist, since glaucoma is so common
in bassets and regular vets are not prepared to deal with it.

One piece of advice that has really helped Bel was for us to put a
night-light at Bel's eye level, so he can find his way around at night.
Beforehand he was sometimes finding himself stuck in odd corners. He hasn't
had a problem since we followed this advice from Dr. Brown.

Since none of our electrical outlets are visible, I bought some stick-up
lights that have worked beautifully. Now I don't have to worry about being
awakened from a dead sleep by Bel making an awful noise because he's stuck
behind a chair, in the corner of the dining room.
