Shannon, you need to find a vet that is at least a little familiar with
basset hounds. A vet that says basset hounds don't bloat would be replaced
in a heartbeat here so start interviewing some vets or ask the Drool list if
there is anyone in your area and if they can recommend a good vet to you.

We have destructo hounds in our house. The only reason our remote remains
intact is because we've learned to put it up out of reach. It has tooth
marks in it but is still functional. The list is infinite but here are a
few of the many chewed (and usually destroyed) items: multiple pairs of
glasses (thank doG, the cheapies that the DH uses, not mine that cost a
small fortune!!), ipod ear tips are a real favorite here and the girls have
eaten many of them, multiple pairs of the DH's leather drumming gloves (yes,
they're expensive and yes, he gets really po'd!), countless pairs of my
slippers, two pair of my favorite leather sandals, countless shredded books,
quilt patterns, magazines, paper towel rolls and toilet paper, one of our
fosters left her teeth marks on the leather couch and foot stool, our most
recent foster chewed up two telephone chargers and destroyed the electric
cord on one of our living room lamps, and don't even get me started on the
number of the grand children's toys they've eaten. I get REALLY mad when
they get on top of my sewing desk and raid the quilt pieces that I've got
waiting to be put together and play tug of war with the pieces. I swear
these hounds are six feet tall when they stand on their hind legs and their
tongues are six feet long! Anyway, the list is endless....but they are so
darn cute when they get caught that we seldom (never!!) yell at them. We
just shake our heads, clean up the mess and go to Best Buy to replace
whatever got destroyed that day. We have been very fortunate and they've
never gotten our cell phones but the DH's ipod has some teeth marks in it.
Usually I'll hear that plastic crunch that you immediately know is something
they shouldn't have before they really damage that. I've gotten to the point
that I put something that may be really dangerous to them in the microwave
or in a cupboard because nothing is safe on the counters with these
cruisers. Jersey got into the chocolate Halloween candy the first year she
was here and that's all it took to train me about that stuff! It's kind of
heartening to see so many of you do the same things we do. At least I know
that we aren't the only (crazy!) people whose house is run by the hounds!!

Here is link to a video of our BaRCSE buppies playing:

the pups and their mom, Abby, right now and they are all (people and
pups) having a wonderful time.
