I want to put this out there because i am having difficulty with a
foster, and want to help him rather than turn him away again. i have
one of the tristate 16 rescued from a breeding kennel. he is 4 years
old. he is sweet, gives kisses and wants nothing more than a soft bed
and to be petted. he doesn't play with toys, and has some interaction
with hershey and einstein. he is very timid, afraid of noises, pretty
much just sleeps.......almost seems depressed. the main problem is the
housetraining. we have a doggy door, and he is not afraid to use it,
but will not go out by himself without me putting him out. he doesn't
like being grabbed or taken with a leash by the collar. usually he will
pee outside if i put him out, but doesn't get the idea that is what out
is for. he sits there cowering and crying because he wants to come in
but is afraid, and finally does, but it is as if he sees going out as a
punishment. i have caged him at night, and when i am not home and he
has vomited in the cage. i think he gets himself very anxious. if i
leave him out of the cage he pees and poops in the living room. all of
the other foster dogs i have had here, have learned to use the doggy
door, and liked the freedom. when i lead him to the door he cowers and
bucks, fighting me by pulling back, but he never growls or bites. i
have praised him when he does go outside, but he just doesn't get it. i
have put his poop , and the paper towels with his pee outside, so that
the scent might remind him that this is where he is supposed to do that.
this is a last plea for ideas from the group that knows all the
answers. i am willing to try, because i feel so very sorry for him, and
he will make someone a good pet if we can overcome this hurdle. i do
work, so there are periods of time that i can not be monitoring him.
when we are home he is not caged we watch him for signs that he has to
go, and then take him to the door. thanks, because we are all in this
together, nancy
