I keep in my car photocopies of a cartoon that shows a couple of dogs  
standing in the blazing sun outside a car that has its windows rolled  
down just a crack and a couple of overheated humans trapped inside.  
The caption says something to the effect of "see how it feels?" I  
have statistics about heat, cars, and dogs on it, and I leave it on  
windshields as needed.

I also keep the phone number for our city's animal control in the car  
so I can call them to report dogs in cars on hot days. I started  
doing this after I learned the Home Depots in my area won't announce  
on their loudspeakers the license plates of cars with endangered dogs  
in them. I was appalled when I found out they wouldn't do this. They  
told me it was because too many owners got mad at them for doing it.  
Oh, dear. Of course, it's now a moot point with those Home Depots  
because they let people bring their dogs in the stores, a life-saving  
business decision on their part. But all the other stores that still  
don't allow pets......
