I sent the following e-mail to Marilyn Briggs. I'm really clumsy (ignorant?) with respect to computers and couldn't figure out how to also send it to the Daily Drool, so I'm forwarding it instead of cc'ing it. I hope you will print it. Thank you, Val

Subject: Shelter challenge voting

Hi Marilyn,
I've been voting faithfully. (Like you, the site won't let me vote more than once a day).
A few Drools ago, Synthia Ross posted something that made sense to me--is there any way of finding out how many votes the shelters that win the weekly prizes are getting? (And how many we're collecting each week from Droolers?) Synthia suggested that if we are way short every week, maybe it would make more sense to pick a name out of a hat from all the basset shelters participating, and Droolers vote for that one rescue every day from now to the end of the challenge.
I know your idea of switching to voting for just one rescue (whichever is closest to winning their state) after the weeklies are finished is similar.
Perhaps after a few more weeks of doing weekly shelters, if we can't bring one into first place, then it is time to re-assess and switch strategies?
Also I notice there are prizes for things like "most touching story". I'm betting someone could come up with a basset winner in that category (especially if one of our primo writers--of which there are many on the Drool--drafted the copy.)
I'll also send a copy of this e-mail to the Drool. I also find it helpful when the rescue of the week posts the challenge e-mail address each day--then all I have to do is click on it, instead of copying the address off the sheet of paper I keep next to the computer. Less typos and frustrations for me (a notoriously bad typist).
Thanks again for organizing this. Val
