[Dailydrool] chips

Yesterday morning we came out of the house to find a strange grey cat crouched in the passage way. Winnie wanted to sniff it and was allowed to get close enough to give it a little sniff. Went out on our walk and met a neighbour who I know has a grey cat, she said it was probably not hers as she had left him indoors. We got home and it was still there, this time it let Winnie sniff it all over, Fred was far more cautious, I gave them their breakfast and checked it was walking away but swaying badly. I got John the c at ts basket and caught the cat. As soon as the vets opened I rang them, they didn't recognise the description but said bring it in. I took him in and they checked for a chip, luckily he was chipped and registered with them and in fact lived just up the road. I left him there and popped a note through my neighbours door. that evening she came round to thank me and said he had probably been hit by a car and had suffered severe brain damage, apparently he had become steadily more unresponsive throughout the day, the decision to put him to sleep was the only option. Turns out he never went out the front and just stayed in their garden so had no road sense also explains why I had never seen him. A sad ending but he was looked after all day and she had the peace of mind of knowing where he was when she got home from work.
I know there is little about Bassets in this story but it was his lack of reaction to Fred and Winnie which alerted me to the fact that there was something wrong and highlights the importance of getting our animals microchipped.

Winnie (I liked the cat)
Fred AKA the big wuss (it might have scratched me)
John the c at t (what cat?) he was indoors the whole time and never saw it.
