While we are also under attack from the squirrels here, the gang clears them out every morning very loudly. Then they get to come in and eat. Same procedure for supper. One evening I called them in for supper and four came running but not Drummer who is about 11 and blind in one eye. He showed up a few minutes later but kept looking over the deck and as soon as he finished he ran off. The others followed which is kind of unusual. So I went out in the yard and found five bassets in a circle, snooters checking out something. As all multiple basset owners know, this is not generally a good thing. They were jostling each other for a better sniff when I closed in and saw a full grown rabbit (not moving, thankfully!) in the middle. I yelled for them to Drop and back off and suddenly Drummer grabbed the rabbit and ran off with it. I started screaming for the X to get out here and get the rabbit which was definitely deceased. He said that I could get it so I took some pages from Marlene's book and said a few unprintable things about "your dog, your problem" Meanwhile, I am trying to keep the other four away. X saunters out and stands there looking helpless. I handed him a shovel and my gardening gloves and he eventually got the rabbit from Drummer. I suspect that Drummer was the original "finder" of the rabbit which may have already passed on but I found it interesting that with two 3 year olds and a 9 year old that the old half blind basset would be the one to score the prize!
