Regarding your one year old's ribs--this happens frequently with young  
basset hounds, and the chances are good that when he is about 2 years old, and  
his chest fills out, the ribs will "spring" and the indentation will  
disappear.  It may not go away completely, but unless your vet thinks  something 
is wrong, I would try not to worry about it too much.
 
Remember, Bassets are a dwarf breed, and have some really unusual-looking  
bone structure.  Sometimes they look really strange until they are  mature.
