Why not try a promise collar bought at vet
I have trained two bassets and one airedale with that
The lead is like a bridle on horse and the dog has to go where the head goes
It worked wonderfully for two stubborn bassets and one feisty airedale
Much more humane too,
They do put on a bucking/rubbing off  episode at first but settle down 
quickly if you go walking immediately
