Abner - now you know I would love to see pics of any basset, anytime,
but certainly the (in)famous Abner!

Bev: Oh yes. THere is no question that these dogs are pure-bred
basset hounds. My Pippa certainly comes from a long and illustrious
line of show-winning Champion bassets. As does Gabby, mother to my
Barney. Pippa came from a very careful breeding; pedigrees were
studied, lines were looked at, the best and "little bit lacking"
features of mother and father (as pertains to the breed standard) were
taken into account. THe thing about the long-hair gene is that - so
I've been told - it is a double-recessive. That means that both
parents must be carrying the gene - and even then, each puppy born has
only a 1-in-4 chance of "expressing" the gene - i.e. having long-hair.
Given this set of circumstances, you can see how a) the gene can find
for generation of dogs, even among the most careful and studious
breeders, and b) the long-haired ones are so rare.

There, aren't you all happy to have a genetics 101 lesson on a friday afternoon?

Long-haried bassets may be purebred Bassets. Just as Long-haired
German Shepherds may have a wonderful pedigree. It only means they are
a throwback, or a mutant, or whatever you want to call them, but they
are still genyoowine, 100 percent, totally awesome Basset Hounds.
