[Dailydrool] Chip in for Bassets at Auction

Corey Rigoni michbasset at aol.com
Wed Oct 12 11:05:28 PDT 2011

A consortium of rescues have banded together to attempt to purchase 11 bassets that are being auctioned off as part of a puppy mill liquidation. One of the females has newborn puppies that will be sold with her; another is pregnant and due to whelp any day. Both mothers are BARELY two years old! The rescues purchased four of the dogs at the auction last week, with the remaining seven (plus puppies) on the block this coming weekend. Every dog that is saved from returning to a life of a puppy mill slavery will mean as many as 60 fewer puppy mill puppies being produced!

We all SAY we are against puppy mills and here is a way to actually do something meaningful and immediate. A Chip-in has been established...no donation is too small. Please consider helping. While they hope to raise $2200 total, bear in mind that the females with puppies will go for a high price because their puppies are quick money for someone and really, the rescues will probably need more than what they are hoping to raise. PLEASE spare these dogs what could be horrible lives. The link for the Chip in is:

http://bassethelp.chipin.com/4-bassets-at-auction

Again...any amount will help. Thank you.

Corey Rigoni

Nigel, I have a favor to ask,I know it won't be for a while but I have a puppy
named" Racer" on the other side of the bridge and she must be very lonely .I
know she doesn't know any other bassets there, she is probably looking for me
because the night before she left I played a while with her,I had hoped she
would remember me,I think she did. When you get there, now, take your time there
is no hurry,if you would just be her friend I would really appreciate it. I
can't stand the thought that she may not find someone to wait with her till
someone she knows comes for her. She was just 6 days short of 5 months old, that
is still very young to be in a strange place .Ask her not to be mad at me I
promised to take care of her and I failed but I tried with all my might to bring
her back it just did not work.I have forgiven the humans whose care she was
under at the time but I'm finding it much harder to forgive myself.Tell her I
love her,Nigel and I will come for her ,I don't know when
,but if she waits ,I will come. She is very sweet, you will like her.
I will not post what happened but I will reply to individuals who want to know.

I was stunned by Nigel's prognosis. I just can't wrap my brain around it. I
cried myself to sleep and tossed and turned all night. Bev's stories have
made Nigel, Llewis, Conley, and Cooper real in our lives and this news has
hit us all so hard. Please know that we are wrapping our arms around you
albeit virtually.

That all said, I find it necessary for me to step away from The Drool at
least temporarily. All the losses have taken their toll on me and I
ask myself why I put myself through this voluntarily day-to-day. My heart
breaks regularly for my Drool Family and it effects my ability to enjoy life
to the fullest. You all remain in my thoughts and prayers.

It seems there has been so much sadness on the Drool lately - that the
recipient of this email suggested I send it in, as it made her laugh.

Let's see - to make it at all basset related - the dogs slept threw it all.
I tried to clear up any "salty" language - let's hope it sends in the G
rated version, not the first version. Vikki

Today was so nuts ~ I just figured I would share it with the person that
enjoys my life soooo much more that I do!? Ahahahaha....

Last night while locking down the house - I locked the sliding glass door,
and noticed something I could not identify under the lock, where the door
closed in the slide.
I put my glasses on - still couldn't identify said object!?! It was at that
moment something just said "don't look any more - go to bed"..
So I leave a note for Jack (dadperson) "something in the sliding glass
door - please have a look" and put it where I knew he would find it, taped
to his coffee can.
I get up the next morning - getting ready to make my tea, and casually
inquire as to what the mystery object was. He gets a sheepish look on his
face and informs me it is - (are you sitting down?) - HALF of a tarantula!?
Half? Tarantula? But just half? I guess one of us was either going in ~ or
going out the door - and old Mr. Horney thought there was a woman
tarantula in the house and thought he'd make a break for it - and we cut him
right in half!?!

>From there I get informed "and the glue trap behind the refrigerator caught
another snake" - "WHAT!?!?"(this has happened before)...." I thought you
found all the snake entrances????" "YOU SAID YOU FOUND ALL THE ENTRANCES"!?!
Evidently not....

After that he goes under the sink to check the glue trap (which is supposed
to catch any wayward rodents - multi purpose objects glue traps) - when he
announces "I found a big crack under the sink where I think they are coming
in". Oh good... "It looks like someone tried to caulk it before, but it's
all come loose" - and of course he can't find any caulking compound. No
problem - I'll buy more. Then he gets a wad of paper towels and heads down
under the sink again.
Of course smart mouth me informs him that a snake can get by a wad of paper
towels - just wait till I go get some caulk compound - blah blah blah - when
he comes back out with a dead snake - that was half on and half off the glue
trap - he fails to mention he is coming out with a dead snake (about a foot
and a half long) and I almost pee myself.
Forget tea - I need Ouzo. I look at the glue trap, and see what looks like a
two inch worm, but on closer inspection..... can you guess what it was?????
Snake you guess??? You are correct Sir!!!!! Forget the Ouzo - I need Jack
Daniels....

So today's carnage tally - one big hairy spider ~ and three snakes of
varying sizes.

Jack LOVES living here - I told him you owe me big time for being here.....
He just can't understand what all the excitement is about!?!

I am usually a lurker with few postings, but my heart goes out to Nigel and
his loving mom and dad as he will be truly missed.. We loved reading his
stories and he was a truly special hound in many ways. Toby Lance and I
will miss him dearly and all his escapades. You are in our hearts and
prayers.

Finally returned to reading the DD after many months of avoiding so much
bad news, only to read about Nigel's woes. I've been trying to get my cousin
to adopt a Basset but he says losing another dog would be too much to endure,
it's so sad, and yet I can't imagine living without one. Nigel, you have
brightened up so many bad days for me and Archie, your family has to be
devastated. Archie is sending his famous peanut butter flavored drool for you,
he
makes it from "scratch". He says it's ok to share it with your mom and dad,
and please giv'em a big hug from our pack.

Nigel - you are a very brave houndie. You're still making everyone smile.
It's pouring rain in the Piedmont of North Carolina this morning, and I think
it's all the angels in Heaven crying for Nigel and his family. Plus the rain
hides the tears of us Droolers who are so sad to hear of Nigel's prognosis.
Nigel, I don't want you to go, but I want you to be able to run and play again -
you know what's best for you. Bev and John - as someone else said, you all feel
like a part of our family. Personally, I haven't given up hope.
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.
We love you Nigel!
Hugs,

Dear Bev, John, Nigel and Brothers,

The hounds are sending all the drool they can muster up for all of you. Take
this time to spoil Nigel and I think he will have some good days ahead still
enjoying his time here. Many years ago we had a big lab mix who woke up on a
Sunday morning and his back legs just wouldn't work. After spending days at the
vet they determined that he had spondilosis (sp) and might recover so we brought
him home. To make this long story short, he never did however we all adjusted
to his plight. We got him a walking cart which he outgrew in about 6 months
because he just got heavier from lack of exercise. My husband built a ramp to
get him down the steps into the yard and I had to literally pick him up by
grabbing him in the back end and wrap my arms around him to walk him out. We
improvised......we propped him up over a picnic table bench to poop....he
couldn't release his bladder from the paralysis so I would prop his back end
between my knees and squeeze his bladder......it worked
. Harley lived for a year after he got sick and we made the decision to send
him on to his next adventure when he became totally incontinent. He was a big
dog.....135 pounds when he left us. He was a very happy boy.....loved life even
when he couldn't walk because he was with us all the time and was a great
listener :-). I might add that I went from a size 12 down to size 8 in that
year from carrying Harley's back end around...lol.

Don't give up on Nigel yet......he might surprise you and decide to hang around
for a while. Drool and love produce amazing results.

fly....on a broomstick...They are flexible like that...

It is much regret that I am letting all know that I had to put my dear heart

morning, and options were limited. She has joined Lori Lu who went to the

Okay, Humane Society of McCormick County is about 8 tenths of a percent
ahead of us, so everyone please vote as often as you can. It is legal to
vote from more than one computer or device, and it is also legal to vote
from more than one browser. So I have 5 browsers installed on my two
computers - Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera - and I
open each one up to vote daily. Which is 10 votes, plus another vote on the
iPhone. Totally legal and very easy to do. All the browsers are free to
download and easy to use. Try it.

Bev,

Thank you so much the courage you showed in sending Nigel's words of comfort
to all of his many fans in cyberspace. We will miss his antics
tremendously; we can only imagine the hole his leaving will create in your
home. His legal skills, to say nothing of his vocabulary and his great
exchanges with Lewis, will be sorely missed. He's provided many great
memories to us all. Please give him an extra snuggle from us - and one for
Lewis, Conley, and Mr. Cooper, too.

Our thoughts are with you all at this sad time. Take care of each other.

Kathy Wilson, Twinkletoes, Hooter the harrier, and Moose (ATB)
