[Dailydrool] Harriet & the tramadol

Our foster Harriet underwent spay and hernia repair surgery on Tuesday. As
Dr. Ed explained to me when I picked her up yesterday, the surgery was more
complex than he originally thought. Part of it I'm sure was due to the size
of her hernia (poor old gal). He was tempted to keep her another night but
felt comfortable releasing her to our care. Dr. Ed explained what we needed
to look for and monitor - just in case. Apparently Dr. Ed took Harriet home
with him Tuesday night so he could monitor her overnight. You have to admit
there's not many vets that would do that.

Anyway when I picked her up, I was given the bag of medicine - Clavamox
(okay), Previcox (okay) and Tramadol (oh crap!). The other vet Dr. Betsy
explained that Harriet is a little stinker about taking her medicine. Dr.
Betsy also explained that the Tramadol tastes especially nasty. With a
smile on her face, she wished me luck with Harriet and her taking medicine.
I told the vet not to worry Tramadol was just discussed on the Daily Drool
and that I had some ideas.

Round 1
Put medicine in yummy canned dog food. Harriet spit all the meds out.

Round 2
Put medicine in peanut butter. Harriet spit all the meds out.

Round 3
Put medicine in Harriet's favorite treat - Cheese. Harriet spit out the
Tramadol.

Round 4
Put medicine in cream cheese. That round went to me - Harriet finally
swallowed the Tramadol.

Thank you to the drooler that suggested cream cheese. That worked (at least
last night and this morning).

While Harriet and I were battling it out over her medicine, I had a few
eager bassets willing to help out if Harriet didn't want it. I'm not 100%
sure if they wanted the dog food/peanut butter/cheese or the medicine. I'm
never sure with my basset nephews and basset niece.
