Oh. Annette, how I related to your story of sending the DH out with innumerable instructions. I would do the same thing, then pray that I got the right information back.

One word of advice though. Ear infections and allergies are often connected. We have had two hounds with serious allergies who ended up with serious ear problems. So don't take them lightly. There is medication out there that can help--though it was not around when our sweet Alexis had her troubles and ended up with a total ear canal ablation.

You may need to see an allergist or dermatologist, if the problem does not resolve. I give a regular vet two tries with ear medications. If neither works, you need to begin doing more, possibly with a specialist. A test can be done that will discover just what the cause is and identify the medication that is most likely to work. Use any medication religiously, since the hound can build up a resistance to the antibiotic in use, if it's not given often enough. Then it will never be effective.I think that's what had happened to Alexis. But do not let your regular vet give you medication after medication without testing for effectiveness. Things will only get worse if the right drug isn't being used.

Our Holly is currently on Atopica, a serious drug that has gotten rid of most of her allergy afflictions. I am so glad it's available now, since it was not around in Alexis's day. Holly's ears are almost perfect, without surgery. It is a great blessing.
