[Dailydrool] New hound owner... Help!

Hi Jannett,

Welcome to the wonderful world of bassets.  I adopted my first basset almost 2
years ago.   Before that I'd always had labs.   I'm up to 3 bassets at present,
and I foster.

Ummmmmm ..... in my humble opinion bassets don't do very well alone, in or out
of a crate.  How about another basset?  Or even a cat, most bassets like cats
and that could work.

I really wouldn't recommend leaving her outside because it's dangerous ....
someone could open the gate or she might bark and annoy your neighbors or she
could get too hot, plus, it gives her a message that isn't so nice.

Speaking for myself personally I do not crate.  Others do and I applaud them for
loving their bassets as much as I love mine and doing what they feel is best for
them.  If I have to confine one of the dogs (like I do right now because one
just got spayed last Friday and it wouldn't be safe to leave her loose with the
other two) I lock the one that needs to be confined in the office.  There's a
dog bed in there and a couch and they spend time in there all the time anyway
when I work from home.

So, if the basset might get into trouble (not housetrained) or do something
dangerous (likes to chew on electrical cords or can open the fridge .... don't
laugh, some can) then I'd restrict her activity to a single room or couple of
rooms with a door or baby gate.

What's your little girl's name?  Does she have and like a crate already?  If so
you could leave it in the space you want to confine her to with the door open
.....

Good luck,
Dale

Hi,

My family and Ijust adopted a Basset from Daphneyland in Acton, CA.
We couldn't be more overjoyed with our new family member.  She is a beautiful 6
yr old girl.
My question is, since my kids are in school/day care all day and my husband and
I both work full time is it ok to keep our new girl crated during the day.  The
other option is a dog run outside. What do you recommend is the best option.  How
do bassets fair in a crate for 4-5 hrs stretches?  Is the dog run better?  We
are heating up again so I'm worried about it being too hot outside and also
worried about a howling hound outside. I am able to come home during lunch for
about an hour so I can spend a little time and take her on a short walk. What do
you recommend at the best option to train her on?

Thanks!
-Janett
