Upon reading some of the stories of bassets escaping from their yards or houses, my mind wandered back to an event that took place with my first basset, Beatrice. I was at work and my husband was home with my two dogs. He let Beatrice outside and then decided to go lay down for awhile (what?). We didn't know at the time that Beatrice could open the screen door that confined her to the backyard. When my husband decided to check on her, she was gone! He ran for his bike and was about to take off frantically looking for her when he spied her over in the neighbor's yard sniffling around. When he relayed this story to me, I was very upset and asked him "Weren't you afraid she could have been killed?" Knowing how I feel about my dogs, he answered, "I was afraid I was going to be killed!!"
