Welcome to the Daily Drool, newbies! You will find an infinite amount of houndie wisdom and advice here. The Daily Drool is just like Basset Hounds - addictive, lol!
Regarding boys or girls - I agree that personality more than gender determines how two dogs get along. Buttercup and Buster both get along with everyone. However, I have two husky bitches that can get along with males only, so I have to keep them separated and have a male dog in with each of them. I have another husky bitch and a husky dog that get along with everyone. So neither breed nor gender count as much as personality. JMHO.
Marie Campbell, welcome and thank you for saving your three Bassets. I read that you have Newfs and Saints, too. We have a 4 year old male Newf in our menagerie.
Jacqueline, your Basset shouldn't smell. She could have an ear infection, a skin infection or any number of things. Being intact or spayed should not matter as far as Basset smell. Please take her to your vet for an evaluation. We have a 6 month old mixed breed puppy we rescued and he has a bit of an odor despite baths. He is missing some hair and scratching. He has been to the vet who checked for mange (negative, thank the Lord) and said it is either malnutrition (body score of 1 - extreme emaciation when we got him), a fungus infection or a little of both. She wants him to gain a little weight, and if it doesn't get better, she will put him on an anti-fungal med. He goes back in 2 more weeks for his second set of vaccinations and re-evaluation of his skin.
To all those whose hounds are ailing or have gone to the Bridge (way too many of both), we send oceans of drool from the Bassets as well as the Newf and the Pyrenees. Tender hugs and gentle thoughts and prayers from the slaves to you all. It is so hard to see your beloved companions ailing or for them to go to the Bridge.
Love to our Drool FamilyBrenda and the Thundering Herd of Forever Home Farm
