Our Lucy had epilepsy.  Frightened us half to death the first time.  Get your niece to video/photograph the type of fit as there are different types.  Lucy went rigid and would wet the floor as she was coming out of a fit.  Also bright light hurt her eyes.  Originally Lucy was on Phenobarbitol, later changed to Valium and Misolene (primidon).  Her fits tapered off from a couple a month to about one a year.  Lucy wanted to be comforted and have her leg muscles rubbed during a fit.  She never bit.  Our Veterinary Hospital were unhelpful.  
 
We got kidney/liver function tests done every few years because of the medication, but she lived a long and happy life.
