[Dailydrool] Dry Eye

I foster failed a 6 year old with untreated dry eye. When he arrived, he had yellow goop in both eyes, and had lost some of his sight. The cyclosporin is supposed to stimuate tear duct function and get them working again. After a couple years on it, it did no good for Chester. He is now 11 years old and almost totally blind, but does well. One eye specialist told me I should have his eyes removed, but two different vets have told me not to, if they don't seem to bother him. I use eye drops to kind of wash them out in the morning, and wipe with a tissue. Gel drops periodically, and I also use the overnight extreme dry eye ointment in the morning before I go to work and before bedtime. He has done fine, and does not appear to be in pain at all. DO NOT use any eye drops that "take the red out". Buy only the kind that say "Use as often as needed". I buy the inexpensive house brand of the eye drops. About $2.50 a bottle that lasts a month, probably. The gel
drops are probably $6.00 and last a couple months. The overnight ointment is more--about $10.00 for one tube and that only lasts me a week. I like Genteal the best. Chester is extreme, however, and if you had a dog with one slightly dry eye, you could get by with much less, I am sure. I am thinking $10 to $15 a month, which isn't much when it comes to dog expense.
