I think Bill and Miss Angela's strategy for waiting out tornadoes is very
practical and sane. The worst weather events we've had here in Oregon
(other than the tsunami caused
by the earthquake in Japan) are the high wind and ice storms we sometimes
have in winter. Trees break off or fall; at our old house a 100 ft Douglas
fir fell from across the creek and came to within 10 ft of our house. It
hit so hard it left a rather deep depression in the ground.

I was enjoying planting some spinach in my raised bed vegetable garden
today, noting that the early vegetables were all doing so well. Just
before dinner I looked out to see two big basset hounds standing over the
remains of one particularly large Swiss Chard plant. They had both
trampled on and eaten most of my prize plant. Later, someone spit out a
partly chewed greens sample in the hall. Oh, what sweet dogs! I need to
get more of that low metal fencing!

They are very big tomato fans. Their back yard is the best place for
growing tomatoes by far. I'm going to have to figure out some way to keep
the dogs from dining on the ripe tomatoes. Any ideas, anyone?
