no, apparently not.

buster is a pure basset.  he can sniff out a mater, or some form of it at 30 yards.
lowla is a pure basset.  she too can sniff out some good produce (lately she is into fruits & dill pickles (yeah..go figure).

at the dog park a deer, ground hog, bear, etc could wander by the 2 of them & i doubt they would notice.

miss sally who is basset/beagle mix..a bagle if you prefer.  she will spend hours at the park barking into the trees at something only she can see or smell.  she is the one who will notice the deer, or stick her head into the groundhog hole.  she has one spot at the park where she constantly tries to go under the fence & get out (thankfully miss maggie moo, the assistant matriarch of the basset brigade usually lies across the spot & blocks her escape....moo takes her responsibilities seriously.)

sally follows in the footsteps of mr cooper the basetter who was the mighty groundhog slayer.  wildlife she can smell.  you give her a tomato with the others, that she won't touch.

so yes, in my house..the basset mixes are on top of the scent things.  the pure ones..well if i need to find produce..i am sent.  i do think a bunny would scare the crap out of mr "i was rescued from staten isalnd & am thus urban" buster..but hey if you slap some sauce & cheese on it..now we are talking.

(& yeah you should see the boy hiking...it ain't pretty!)
