[Dailydrool] no more dogs

Oh my sister and I have both said "no more dogs." Sometimes it's been
"no more fosters for a while." Then I'll hear about a dog coming into
rescue or a basset sitting in boarding then we'll open our home for
that foster.

When I lost Grace and then Wolfgang within a month of each other, I
said "no more fosters for a while" after our then foster Julia was
adopted out. My heart needed some time to heal from Grace and
Wolfgang. Well that lasted less than two weeks. There was a 5 year
old male basset named Flash whose owner died recently. Flash had
heartworms and severe allergies. The poor guy was missing half his
fur, his skin was bright red and he smelled yeasty. He was scheduled
for one of our foster homes in the Chicago area. Unfortunately she
could not take him. I couldn't leave him boarded at the vet clinic.
My sister and I opened our home to Flash - now renamed Dexter. He fit
into our pack immediately. He certainly was a project though.
Getting his allergies under control meant a lot of work - frequently
bathing, lots of medicine and of course finding out which food he
could eat. It took me more than two months to finally sign the
adoption papers.

Whenever I say "no more dogs", I usually get a hard stare (aka "the
look") from Dexter. That dog knows me better than I do myself.
