The kitties got a new toy today.  It has balls in it that go around a track
and a catnip mouse.  Marley thought it should be hers or at least she
appointed herself head toy inspector.  She was bound and determined to have
a go at it.  The mouse must have smelled good.  Right now she is asleep
next to me looking like little miss innocent.  She is little miss grouchy.
The each got a bone today and Maggie did not act like her usual bone
collector self.  She loves her bones.  The other two don't care.

Our family could use some drools and positive thoughts tomorrow and in the
future.  I won't go into it.  Suffice it to say, there is a lot of stress
and negative stuff going on.  Thanks in advance.  We will be ok.  Life
hasn't just given us lemons but a whole lemon orchard with no sugar.  The
girls have helped keep us sane.

Thanks.

Hubby and I sat and reflected on  issues of life last night,   first lets
say we were both stone sober, not a drop of alcohol in either of  us,  after
watching foot ball all day we decided to have a conversation  about
anything and everything .  we discussed life and death  and  both our wishes,  mine
was  ( to live to be 100 and piss off  everyone that I can bwahahahahaha )
not really, well , maybe ?  so  then the subject turned to our two girls
Maggie & Annie  and how they  have taken over our lives and stolen our hearts,
and who would ever give  them the love and attention that they both DEMAND
, if something were to happen  to both of us. who would know that they both
get covered up every night at  bedtime, that Maggie has the pink blankie
and Annie has the purple one?   that Annie is afraid of squeaker toys,  and
Maggie loves them. and who  would know that they are extremely bonded to each
other and can't be separated  ?  I read all the time  in the paper where
people relinquish one or  more of their dogs, HOW do people do this ??????  My
dogs have  feelings   just try taking one to the vets and leave the other
one  home ,  HA   they are a pair, left & right,   they  go together.
I don't even want to think about losing one of them and sending them some
where  they don't understand.  where is my mommy & daddy, where is  my
house, my yard, my nice warm bed   and why am I in this loud noisy  strange place
with all these other barking dogs, where is my sissy, where did  she go
??????????
every Sunday in our local paper they have a pictures and listings of
adoptable dogs, the sadness they must feel not knowing WHY ????  just  senseless
, or maybe it's because they can't talk , that  people feel  that  they have
no feelings ????  I , for one, I can relate more  easily to my dogs than I
can most people,  I actually don't like being  around people at all.   OK
enough on the deep thought  stuff,  Im exhausting what few brains I have left
!

Is the Eukanuba dog show going to be broadcast on TV ?  I missed it

Oh my sister and I have both said "no more dogs."  Sometimes it's been
"no more fosters for a while."  Then I'll hear about a dog coming into
rescue or a basset sitting in boarding then we'll open our home for
that foster.

When I lost Grace and then Wolfgang within a month of each other, I
said "no more fosters for a while" after our then foster Julia was
adopted out.  My heart needed some time to heal from Grace and
Wolfgang.  Well that lasted less than two weeks.  There was a 5 year
old male basset named Flash whose owner died recently.  Flash had
heartworms and severe allergies.  The poor guy was missing half his
fur, his skin was bright red and he smelled yeasty.  He was scheduled
for one of our foster homes in the Chicago area.  Unfortunately she
could not take him.  I couldn't leave him boarded at the vet clinic.
My sister and I opened our home to Flash - now renamed Dexter.  He fit
into our pack immediately.  He certainly was a project though.
Getting his allergies under control meant a lot of work - frequently
bathing, lots of medicine and of course finding out which food he
could eat.  It took me more than two months to finally sign the
adoption papers.

Whenever I say "no more dogs", I usually get a hard stare (aka "the
look") from Dexter. That dog knows me better than I do myself.

Dear Lilie Basset,

I don't keep the muzzle on Truman for more than a few minutes-5 at
most.  Then I take it off and give him another chance.  If he keeps
barking, I show him the muzzle again.  That usually does it.

Truman only goes completely bark crazy when guests show up-especially
his favorite ones: like the grandboys, Cassandra, Nathaniel, Heather,
and Tom, our grown kids, my friend Dana and her daughter Bella.  He
just loves people and has to speak to them.  I have never had a dog
who was so darn enthusiastic about seeing his favorite people.

I didn't want you to think that we kept the muzzle on him though.

Good luck, Lilie,
Janice

I need help. I know this has probably been covered a million times, but its
really hit a bad spot. Its so cold outside, and while I am only gone for
work, its still cold out there. I have a lab/chow with aggression issues
that is a whole different story, but my basset....well, I now live in a
house with C at ts! Drake has never been around cats, and I have no idea how
to make them happy together. Right now, he has to stay outside when I am
not there, and the cats have to be locked up for him to come inside in the
evenings until he goes to his crate for bed. I HATE this for him. The cats
hate being locked up and tear frantically at the door with claws, Drake
hates being outside and makes it known to all the neighbors, who are none
too sympathetic to his plight. He is an incessant barker anyway. Inside,
outside, if he is awake, he is barking, so living in a city is very hard on
him. Can someone give me any tips on how to safely introduce him to
kitties? The only time I know he has been around a c at t, he chased it
mercilessly, and the owner was afraid he would kill it. He had run away and
someone was keeping him while I was looking for him when this happened, so
I have never seen the behavior, but the cats owner is in ultimate fear of
him attacking, or playing too rough, or traumatizing the kitties with his
barking or play. Anyone have any tips to improve the situation? introducing
nice kitty play, and maybe the incessant barking as well? Feel free to
email me off list. I want this to be the best year ever for my babies.
PS I know its a basset list, but if you have experience with other
aggressive dogs, Ill gladly take advice on the lab/chow. He mostly loves
people, but thinks he weighs 4 pounds (hes 140lbs) and is VERY dog and cat
aggressive. Ive had him for 6 years, and have never been able to break him
of this, so he has to be kept separately, which means far more time outside
than I would like.
I know I sound like a terrible parent, I swear they are well loved, and
taken care of, they just arent happy right now, and neither am I. And with
the temperature being so strangely sickly cold in West TN (coldest Ive ever
seen) I have to do something soon. Thank you in advance!

Hey everyone!  This is Beauford and I am 4 years old today!  So far it is
an okay day.  I got a Bone a Mint and mom drove for the first time since
her surgery and she went and got me a beef tendon for tomorrow.  I also got
a new toy, but Browyn is hogging it at the moment.  I was supposed to get
to pick out my own treat and toy, but it was very cold today (2 degrees)
and mom had to run some other errands.  Mom thought it was way to cold for
me to wait in the car.  Personally, I wish she would get some pee pads so I
wouldn't even have to go outside.  I have a nice warm jacket, but I am a
boy and there are over 6 inches of snow on the ground.  This still causes a
problem.  Bugsey still insists on going outside naked.  His loss.  He
doesn't stay outside as long as Browyn and I do.  Anyway, just wanted to
say hi and say that we are drooling for all those in need and we hope that
Conley and all the other pups that have had birthdays lately had good ones!

Hi all, it's the ever clueless momPerson,

I have to chime in on who will take care of the dogs when we can't anymore.  My
mother nailed that one right on the head.

My mother (may her memory be for blessing) lived in a beautiful home on a lake
in New Jersey which she owned outright.   She had 3 glorious yellow labs, one of
which she had imported all the way from Sweden.  She had gotten older and less
able to work with them and these dogs were pretty darn wild, all 3 unaltered
males around 110 lbs each.  I am her only child.  I knew what her will said and
she had begged me not to contest it, my mother knew me, I would NEVER EVER have
gone against her wishes.

She left me her mothers jewlerey and the woodcarvings from her african adventure
and love and memories.  But she left her car to a woman who worked in lab rescue
who envied and it would never have one like that otherwise.  And the house she
left to a man who had never owned a home in his life.  This man, with a high
school educations, worked maintaining landscape on commercial properties.  Over
the years he had helped her out with her property and her dogs.  She had spoken
with him and he promised to take in her dogs when she died.  And she promised
him the house on the lake if he did it.  And he did it the day she died and she
left the house to him in her will with that condition.  And her brother (my
uncle)  went CRAZY over it and asked me to contest the will (it had been his
parents house first) but there was no way, I was so proud of my mom.  And the
man .... Terry.  He is a good honest man.  Two of those dogs were nearly 12 with
health problems that would take up pages.  The third, the one imported from
Sweden, all of his littermates where champions and he was only 4.  I did talk
Terry into rehoming that dog into a home with one of his litermates in Virginia,
Terry still drives down to Virginia twice a year to check on him and ensure all
is well there.

So if you want to make sure the dogs are taken care of one way it to tie a VERY
large asset to that wish.  And set up checks and balances such that others check
on the well being of the dogs and if they are not in delightful conditions that
asset is reassigned.

Works.

More later from the clueless momPerson who's mother was FAR from clueless and
she loved dogs as much as any one of us.

Hi all, I wanted to see when the next shelter challenge begins and are we
still going to vote for Bluegrass Basset? If I remember correctly, they
were promised to be next. Due to lack of funds and volunters they have not
been accepting bassets for a while now. I myself have voted frequently and
faithfullly for all the other basset rescues in the challenge and I would
love for my home state (KY) to be next as promised! Pippa Girl and Daisy
Mae would like to wish all the hounds a very happy New Year and we are
praying for more homeless babies to find a loving home this year!

Thanks,

HI Droolers,

We helped our Noah to the Bridge this morning.  HE had been hurting,  bad
arthritis.  The last 2 days he was hurting more than usual.  Yesterday, he
could not get up from his orthopedic bed,  even wetting himself during the
night because he could not get up.

Noah would not take pills,  he is like me in how much he despises taking
pills.  I had been able to fool him on occasion, but a while back, our vet
and I decided he would live our his life without meds since it was so
stressful on him to try and get them down.

Today was the day when his pain was so apparent, I could no longer think it
was my imagination.  We set him free this morning.

Noah came to us from a woman who neglected him.  He was a mess when we got
him, but our vet was wonderful in the care he got.  I was never sure he had
the brown truck stop by,  but he did have a huge heart.  He loved to be
petted and brushed,  for hours if you would.

Noah was our resident pee artists and I have hopes that Pawcasso Blossom
will help a struggling artist ATB.

I will be posting on FB later his last sidewalk pee art as he went into the
vet.  like us if you want (Senior Houndsabound). I had to take a picture to
remember him that way.

I am truly blessed to have these seniors in our home.  It hurts when they
leave us,  but I think about how much joy I have received from them, and it
outweighs the sadness of this day by far.

Adopt a senior,  love a senior,  you will see.

Drool to all in need tonight,    we miss our big boy tonight!
