Subject: Basset blues

Please forgive me if I go on too long as I am a first time poster.I joined years
ago & have lurked off and on over the years. I have gotten many a laugh with
Nigel & Friends. This post concerns my Abby, a beautiful, sweet, 6 year old
basset.

It all started when we thought that she had had an allergic reaction to
something. Her muzzle swelled up on Memorial Day and off to the emergency vet we
went. After lots of benedryl she seemed ok.Then this small bump in her dewlap
ballooned up.It was drained a few weeks ago and results were fine. She was on
antibiotics (2 courses) and then it all started again.

She had surgery Friday, had the mass removed, was stitched up and then they had
to go back in to tie off some artery that was bleeding. She pulled out the
drains and came home today wearing the cone of shame:(

I asked the vet to give her some meds to sedate her so she wouldn't be
scratching and pulling at the incision (8 inches or so long). I gave them to
her and in minutes all I could see we're the whites of her eyes when they were
open. Her breathing got heavier. It scared me to death. i called the vet and she
said it is normal. Yikes, my poor baby. She was out of it ! She did however wag
her tail two beats when I told her she was "Mommy's good girl."

If any of you have gone through similar issues with your basset I'd love to know
how it all worked out. We await a biopsy result later this week. Abby is my
third basset and none of my others ever had an issue like this. In the meantime
I could use some drool and slobber. I am worried of course ( I have read lots
about what could be happening) but will cross that bridge when we know for sure.
Thanks for letting me tell my story.
