What I have learned over the years is that sometimes even a very
resource-guarding dog will give you a pass if you just don't think about
it, if you just act as if OF COURSE the dog will give it up nicely.

Notice please: I did say "SOMETIMES".
Maybe "Once in awhile" would be better.
Or even
"Rarely".

The best idea is not to try it. And in case you think you can do it without
fear, try it with a cat.
