[Dailydrool] Philby's Laser Therapy

Just wanted to let you know that Tramadol causes lumps on the face. I know
because my dog had an ear infection and took Tramadol. The lump went away
after a couple of weeks and it wasn't painful. You might want to check with
your vet before treating a healthy tooth. The symptoms are very close to
an infected tooth.

Sending drool and love,

Danielle

Shannon, the vet has told me that declawing a cat is
essentially cutting off the first knuckle. Now think about
that on your own finger. I don't know how it would be
different on a dog. Try to find someone who clips nails with
a
dremel tool.

On Jan 5, we took Philby to the emergency vet. He was shaking (apparently
in pain) and dragging one of his back legs. Xrays showed he had arthritis
all up and down his spine, with deterioration and calcification. We were
sent home with meds. The next day I called our regular vet and he
suggested laser therapy.

Well, we have completed 6 out of 10 laser treatments, and Philby seems to
be doing much better. He was down to half a Tramadol per day until Monday.

When I took him for his treatment and put his goggles on (to protect his
eyes during the treatment - we ALL have to wear them) I noticed a bulge on
one side of his face. Apparently he has an infected/abcessed molar. So the
vet is coming tomorrw to remove the tooth, clean the rest of them, and
give him his laser treatment. We already started him on antibiotics and upped
his pain meds again so he could eat. (He had been a little off his eating
habits.) Poor baby - getting old is a drag!

He seems to be getting around almost as well as before. He is not
dragging the leg at all, and he will bear weight on it, especially when he wants
to "mark". He is no longer hesitating before he gets up on the sofa. So
overall, we're glad we tried this treatment. Of course, he might have made
the same improvements just using the meds. But I truly believe the
treatments helped, they did not harm him in any way, and if not for the abcess, I
think he'd be off pain meds by now.

Thanks again for all your input!

Mary Lee Trnnka

I definitely think girl dogs are divas! In my experience they are bossy
and territorial (esp to each other). Beau, our boy dog, is a sweet,
laid-back dude. This is true of my  neighbor's shih tzus as well. Girls were drama;
boys easy.

Please don't have your dog's nails removed! As one Drooler mentioned,
it's similar to having your fingertips removed. If you do a little research,
you'll find it's incredibly painful for the pet. Many vets are not doing
this any more.

We send drool to humans and hounds in need!

Must be something in the air. We had a big fight here the other day
between Jersey & Ginger, our two alphas. We have no idea what started
it other than we were having lunch and something got them going.
Jersey has always ruled with an iron paw but she does it with
personality, not by fighting. Well, she fought back this time! We've
been pretty relaxed with Ginger and the rules we've lived by for years
to keep her aggression under control so we're going to go back to
basics and reinstate the rules we've lived by until recently. So much
for getting complacent.

Things seem to happen in threes at our house. Jersey is on the mend
but had us more than a little scared with all the vomiting. Then
Ginger developed a UTI. Our old kitty, Minnie, who would have turned
17 in March started having seizures last week. She had never had a
seizure before but had three back to back one day last week. Our vet
didn't find anything obvious and, at her age, we weren't willing to do
anything invasive so we brought her home. Things improved for several
days until she died in her sleep yesterday morning. We had decided to
let nature take its course and that's exactly what happened. I guess
that is the best thing that we could have asked for.

We have quite a variety of toenail colors here and clipping them is
always a crisis. Ginger gets muzzled and we try to slam dunk her as
quickly as we can. I basically lay on top of her while the DH has a
death grip on each foot as he clips. She's a nightmare. Suzy cries
like she being killed from before we start till after we're done.
Shadow is stoic and just tolerates it. We used to have to muzzle
Jersey but, the other day, I barely had to hold her. She rumbled and
grumbled the whole time but didn't fight us at all. We were a little
worried that she was getting sick again but she's fine. Things change
by the day around here.

We had a fair amount of snow for our area here in NC. We're originally
from snow country, central NY so it's kind of entertaining the way
people get so upset about a little snow here in NC and how it the
local stations ran the news all day long for the past couple of days
about it. The Houndettes aren't interested in the snow at all! They
used to play in it a little a couple of years ago but this time they
don't want anything to do with it. Suzy spent a little time out in it
this afternoon but she was the only one. I was kind of disappointed
that they didn't play at all.

So glad to hear that Debbie is doing ok and Marlene is on the mend.

The Houndettes send get well and heart healing drool to all in need.

I have always been one of the few lucky ones whose basset rather sleep in
then get up to be fed. We used to do AM feedings at 6:15 AM before I left
to work. In the winter this was a problem as Speedy hated to get up if the
sun was not out and it would take me a good 5 minutes to convince him to get
up at such an undoGly hour. Now that I'm home he has let me sleep until
8:30 AM then he resorts to whining and making pitiful noises. Don't get me
wrong, I'm not complaining. I'm just wondering if this is what all you
droolers that have bassets demanding 3, 4, 5 AM feedings go through. I can see
that it would be hard to sleep through.?

Today I actually got up before Speedy. I think he is getting used to the
fact that I'm home now and there is no need to go on a pitiful whine to get
fed. Eventually the momslabe is show up and feed, he would rather sleep
thank-you-very-much. He also does this cute little dance that I need to get a
video of. He does it each time he gets his food bowl at night. Now that the
feedings are later in the morning, he is doing his dance in the AM too.
I'm glad I can accommodate his AM feeding preference now.

Drool to all in need.

With the cold weather I have been sorely pressed to be sure the dogs are
warm enough at night. This room, where they sleep in their crates, used to
be the garage and so it is not well insulated especially the floor, which
is a cement slab with some cheap linoleum on it.
I have fastened blankets to the backs of the crates to keep the cold air
from the outside wall off the crates. I have put multiple layers of padding
and bedding in each crate. Everyone seems ok except Llewis the only dog
allowed to sleep out of a crate.
Sometimes he sleeps in the living room in John's chair which is the perfect
size for a Basset (so is the couch, the other chair, my bed, John's bed and
any other soft spot.)

Anyway I told John the other day to buy another dog bed which he did, a
large rectangular bed that is about 3" thick.

And Llewis LOVES it. Tonight he was moaning and whining, wanting on my bed
which would be ok if he could get down alone, but we're afraid he'll hurt
himself. Finally I took the new bed and threw it on the floor, and he
CRASHED onto it and is sound asleep.

He is the only dog I have who looks as sweet when he is awake as he does
when he is asleep.

Beverly, be careful, you may have started something you can't control with
a
new bed. We have 4 new beds here. Of course we had all kinds of nice beds
anyway, but things changed when Bunny and Baxter arrived. They came with
their own bed, but after a few days it suddenly was no longer acceptable,
so
I drug every dog bed I had out, and we made do for a while, although you
could tell the pack was not satisfied. Then one day foolish Mama saw a
wonderful big box of dog beds at Kroger, and the beds were big and smooshy
and have a zipper so you can remove the cover and wash it, and they were
only $19.95 each. (Kroger does stuff like this in November and December
every year.) So foolish Mama bought ONE bed. Let's just say that it was a
huge hit, everyone wanted to sleep on it except Holly the Dolly who is a
princess and does not sleep on what everyone else does.

Over the next couple of weeks there was so much turmoil over who got to
sleep on the new bed that foolish Mama ended up buying two more beds, for a
total of 3. And then guess what? Holly decided maybe she liked the new
beds after all. So we are back to fighting over who gets to sleep on the
beds, since we are talking 4 dogs and 3 beds. Guess what foolish Mama
does?
Finds one more bed (they are all exactly alike, right down to the color,
dark brown) and buys it. So now we have 4 new dog beds stuffed into the
office/sunroom along with Holly's recliner, 4 old beds in the bedroom plus
Bea's big chair, and the pack has completely taken over what used to be my
formal living room with 2 beds, 2 sleeping blankets, and 2 big soft chairs
for Bea and Holly. So be warned, this is what can happen to people who buy
a new dog bed.

Poor old Rolph still has a sore tailpipe.
After a week of antibiotics and a couple of days of anti- inflammatories -
which we had to stop as they made him vomit - we went back to the vet.

Kevin was not there, so we saw a nice lady called Kim, who said there was
no sign of infection left, but?Rolph's anal glands had refilled and his
tailpipe was still very tender.

We left with a course of steroids to start tomorrow and a soothing
cream.?When applying the cream I can feel a small, hard, lump and he is very, very
tender.

Kevin suggested a spine problem may be contributing to the problem, Kim
suggested his allergies might be in play.

I am trying not to worry my socks off about this.?

Dear Anita,
You are not foolish.? Simply clueless.? Welcome to the club.? I have a
"formal" living room which opens onto the entry way and so it is on display
when I open the front door.? The living room has always been kept neat as a
pin.? The kitchen/family room is where all the action occurs.? It's a hub of
activity.
So where do the dogs settle?? Yup, on the couch so it is covered with
their fleece blankies so they are warm and comfortable.? There is a dog bed in
each corner in case a dog wants to be alone and undisturbed ..... and it's
a good place to store them when you need one you can grab it and drag it
anywhere.
So when someone comes to the door what do they see?? Three dogs in their
face, a heap of blankets on the couch and dog beds in all the corners.?
Unless of course the dog beds have gotten dragged into the family room in which
case there is no place to walk or stand for all the beds (1 lives in there
and 2 more can be needed).
If you want to go into the bedroom you will have to beg
Snoopy/LuLu/Gracies pardon and they will USUALLY make a space for you on the bed if you ask
nicely.
I am not foolish.? I'm not.? I'm clueless.
Yours in cluelessness,
Dale

I don't think I would want to remove the nails just because they are black
and hard to cut. Lots of experienced places cut nails. If you can't get
the hang of cutting them yourself, pay to have it done.

I have three dogs with multicolored nails. That means some are black, some
are clear and some are that stupid marbled color. I actually have more
trouble with the "marbled" ones than I do the black ones.

I cut nails every 2 weeks. I know this sounds crazy, but my dogs are
almost never on concrete or asphalt. Obviously, their backyard is grass
and when I walk them, we have to walk in the ditch, which is grass. So I
don't have anything naturally trimming their nails.

Obviously the clear ones are easy because you can see the quick. On the
black ones, you can see the growth is a smaller diameter than the rest of
the nail. I call it the hook. I cut at the hook. If the nail is still
touching the ground, I take shavings until I see the quick, but haven't hit
the quick. You can do the same thing on the marbled ones, but the lack of
consistency in color can lead you astray. I save those for last so I can
get a feel for how much I am taking off.

If anyone has found a pair of nail clippers (not guilotine) that hold up to
BIG basset nails that like to splinter and shred, I am open to suggestions.
I go through clippers like there is no tomorrow. I hate using dull
clippers.

Re: the thread about cutting nails. Anyone can quick a nail. I mean,
experience helps but even Vets and groomers cut a nail too short. Or maybe
your dog breaks a nail, which is both painful and very bloody. So if you
are home and you hit the quick how do you stop the bleeding?
Well you can buy Quik-Stop. I have two or three little containers of it:
one in the cupboard, one in the grooming bag and one in the glove
compartment of the Van.
But if you don't have any, you may use:
flour
cornstarch
maybe sugar or powdered sugar (never tried this one)

If you have a dog that holds still and you have confidence, SuperGlue is
perfect. Stops the bleeding almost instantly just remember not to touch the
nail with your finger or let go of the dog before it's dry (don't glue his
toes together.)

You may also buy Tissue Glue which I have used but is not as quick as
superglue.

Remember when you apply anything to a bleeding nail that it is sore, and
you have to push all the powders well into the nail so it is best to have
someone to hold the dog.

Broken nails really should be cut off where the break is and packed and
bandaged. If you can wrap the paw until you get to a Vet that is probably
best.
