For the Commander & His Houndservants who stay behind...

There was a Commander named Bo
Who by his fine life he did show
How bassets among us
Keep life at its funnest
We shall miss the Commander, our Bo

This Houndservant is a marshmallow, like every Drooler who ever snuggled a
basset. News of Commander's new posting to the Bridge took HMS Santa Rosa
by surprise, as we are sure it did his Houndservants and everyone on the
Drool. We wept at the news. It was not what we wanted to hear, no, not at
all. We wanted to hear that the Commander had bounced back from his fall.

When we first signed in to the Drool sometime last year, we were utterly
charmed by the Commander and the delightful Pacific Basset Feet. Not
knowing anything (Houndservant's natural state of consciousness),
Houndservant did not know that it was possible to enlist and serve the
fleet. But we figured it out, and were inspired to commission the HMS Santa
Rosa (permanently dry-docked at the Whine Country Spa & Hot Dog Factory)
and staff with an ever-changing roster of officers & crew. Commander Bo &
the Pacific Basset Feet ignited Houndservant's imagination to create an
absurd and utterly amusing (to us) Hounds' Majestic Service. Houndservant's
life has been immeasurably enriched by the shared fiction. And by ongoing,
vital graces like Val's limericks.

Houndservant wonders if it's not the same for all of us Droolers, in one
way or another. We read the Drool, with whimsical and often hysterically
funny reports from the field; we are enchanted; we are made whole, in some
way, from some of the brokenness and disappointments of life. We laugh; and
we mourn. Through these stories we share, we appreciate even more deeply
these majestic, goofy beasties, these wondrous creatures on loan from doG.
And, by extension, each other.

Orders have been cut from the doG in Chief, directing flags at half-mast on
the HMS Santa Rosa through July 4, when we honor all our heroes, alive and
At The Bridge.

Ahrooo!
Ahrooo!
Ahrooo!

We stand on the bow, looking out into the dark night, sure of catching a
glimpse of Bo as he sets off to his new posting, Commanding the Bridge of
Forever.
He has been called to his final duty; we shall follow him by and by.

Ahrooo!
Ahrooo!
Ahrooo!

We salute the life and legacy of Commander Bo. We shall look for his
bright, shining spirit directing us to our immortal quarters when our Tour
of Duty is over.

Lt. Lea, Houndservant & Dogrobber to the Officers & Crew of the HMS Santa
Rosa

Under the Command of the Pacific Basset Feet, in service to the World
Basset Union
