A friend reminded me that we have not updated the DD on Lucy, our sweet girl adopted from Hounds Haven Basset Rescue in Octobe,r after Senior Pw Zoey left for the bridge in August.

> Lucy is doing very well. She is a very good dog and we feel fortunate to have found her. Since she was found as a stray, there are just things we have to imagine about her past. Based on her behaviors, she must have had some past issues with some men, with people carrying tools like rakes or brooms, etc. and with shelter settings. She is a very resilient dog and comes around these issues, but there are things that clearly have had an influence on her. When we give her the first scoop of kibble in a meal, she sort of waits for permission to eat it. We tell her good girl and pat her on the head and that mostly works, but it seems like there must be some sort of command or gesture that she expects.

> She is very smart, full of enthusiasm, loves other dogs, is bossy at day care, curious, and pretty well behaved for a youngster. Our vet says she has had puppies in her former life. General consensus on age is 3. She spent 2 months in a very full shelter in Topeka before going into rescue and any first glance at a bank of crates gives her screech feet. We took her for a nail trim at a groomer and when she saw the cages with a couple of little fluffy dogs waiting to be groomed, she stopped in her tracks and wanted to leave. She did fine once coaxed in, but she was clearly worried. She had the same initial reaction to day care, but certainly has changed her mind about that. She LOVES her time there and is kind of a dominant little squirt, 35 pounds of energy herding all the other dogs around.

> She is a hoot with her toys, zooms on long walks and naps in "her" bay window seat when she finally crashes. She makes us laugh every day - the best thing about bassets! And of course she is stinkin' cute, in the words of a friend who volunteers for Hounds Haven. Needless to say, we are toast over her. She travels well, does great at the lake and is so cooperative. She lets us retrieve things from her mouth, will take pills by just putting them at back of her tongue, does not mind having her ears cleaned. goes willingly in her crate. These behaviors are kind of the antithesis of Zoey, so we had some adjusting to do too!

> For anyone who has lost their hound and is thinking of getting another -we highly recommend going for it! There is nothing that does more to ease grief than the investment of energy in another. No basset takes your previous basset's place and there is no need for that. They all have their own place and make their own inroads into your heart. There is nothing like coming home to a hound and laughing out loud at her silliness.
