 Sally,
     I live in hillbilly county in Florida and many residents still think it is acceptable to let your dogs out for a free range run.  There are two ways to go:
I see many neighbors walking with golf clubs--UGH--a little much for me--or my choice--and I am not sure if this is an option in the UK--pepper gas in a small spray can.  
    I am sorry this happened to you can the basset.  Thank God, the three of you weren't attacked!
