​If your Vet is familiar with the dog and is comfortable using a general
anesthetic then it will probably be ok. Some dogs allow scraping of the
teeth without anything but none of mine and besides if he has an abscess
you can bet he's not going to be happy with someone poking around in his
mouth, much less pulling one of those gargantuan-rooted teeth!
There are good, short-acting anesthetics that can be used, and there are
those with reversal agents.
No one can promise a good outcome, but chances are your Vet knows what he
or she is doing. Ask how many dogs over 11 they do surgery on without a
problem. Trust your Vet. That's what you pay him for.
