I have reluctantly come to believe that a dog breed is ill-served by
publicity. One has only to look at historically ruined breeds beginning
with German Shepherds which continue to be destroyed by those breeding for
angulation rather than the whole dog: Dalmatians (Never an easy breed,
Goldens, Cockers, Beagles (how many structurally correct beagles do you see
as pets?) Poodles: waiting to see what happens to Frenchies.
Look at the rescues to see how breeds are impacted and count their dogs:
Malinois, Border collies, German Shepherds--and what breeds am I seeing in
commercials? Ridegbacks! Never a breed for everyone, like the Malinois this
is going to be one of the big shelter breeds if they catch on.
And our Bassets? With their uneven front legs, extra long, unsupported
back, tucked up loins and nevermind. Publicity is just not good for dogs.
