At our house, we do hand-me-downs. the possessions of one generation of hounds (minus dog tags) are inherited by the next generation of dogs until everything is totally worn out. New pack member here, Ipo, loves the odd yarn powder puff ball that was Commander Bo's favorite. I imagine that previous hounds are pleased to leave their legacies to future family members.
