It is best to spay after the growth plates are closed and it is better after
their first heat also but like Bev said  you must keep them on leash even in
your own yard to make sure you do not get puppies. I think what Mary Wilson
is saying about blood vessels is when a dog comes into heat do not spay them
in heat because bleeding can be worse and it is hard on them. 
Never spay too early it can cause so many problems.
