[Dailydrool] House Mouser

The Dashing Bassets have always had a kitty because I, the mama, had
kitties before I had hounds, and I like them.(There is no accounting for
taste, according to the bassets.)

The only time the DB household had a visible mouse it was discovered by
our first hound, Lady Jane, who chased it out of a closet. It scooted
around the house a bit, chased by Jane and then the kitty (I am almost
certain it was Duncan). The cat chased it into the living room, and it
was seen no more, unless it was the same mouse Belvedere later found,
already dead, under the sideboard in the dining room. Since we had had
bait put down to eliminate the mice, I assume that's what killed it. Of
course Bel ate the poor thing, and I had to make him barf it up again.

There is no question that the cat did not find the mouse and would never
have chased it had not Jane found it. Also doubtless, the mouse did not
meet its end at Duncan's paws or teeth.

I am of the opinion that being a house mouser in no way makes you a
kitty, and hounds may be better mousers than a cat who has never been
trained by mama to see rodents as prey.
