> Where and How:  We picked up Bo at Caitlin Military Housing near Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  Bo was about six months old.  The original family who owned the basset parents had deployed to Germany.  I believe both the suddenness of the deployment and the litter itself were surprises.  When the original family left, the basset pups were farmed out one by one to various navy families living in the housing complex, and as each subsequent navy family deployed, the pups were then passed along to the next family.  We were Bo's third home.  Three years later we acquired another basset from this same litter, and we were Harley's seventh home.  We found Bo from an ad in the local paper. A couple who became good friends of ours adopted another puppy from this same litter from the dog pound, where it had eventually landed.

Lynx had had a best friend in our home in Rhode Island, a four foot long iguana, Whip, who belonged to my son. The cat and iguana snuggled up together under a heat lamp, hung out on window sills together, ate from the same bowl. Whip had to stay behind in Rhode Island because of quarantine restrictions in Hawaii' where iguanas are not allowed.  Lynx seemed lonely to us and we wanted to get him a companion.  Lynx did not care for other cats.  So we got on the Internet and asked "what breed of dog is most likely to get along with cats?" (I am a dog person, and aside from a brief span of time when we had Lynx and the lizard, have always had dogs, so this seemed like a good choice to us).  The Internet suggested "basset hounds or beagles" usually get along with cats if introduced when the dog is young.  We looked in the paper and saw the ad for Bo and the rest is history.  Although Lynx and Bo never became best friends the way Lynx and Whip had been, they tolerated one another. the cat was in charge.
