[Dailydrool] Lab Tests

This refers to Laboratory, not labrador retrievers although it is true of
them as much as Bassets .
It is true, as Vicki discovered--there are different labs for different
things and it is a good idea to try to research this a bit if you have a
dog with a specific problem, or that is being tested for a specific problem.
When I was doing this, there were several places we sent bloodwork, besides
running in-house tests.
In house tests were good for a base line or run of the mill stuff.
Allergy blood was sent out (Spectrum sounds correct)
Endocrine went someplace else
Some went to Texas A&M
Some went to Michigan (Or maybe it was Minnesota or Wisconsin...it's been
awhile)
And of course the two big labs around here at least, Idexx and Antech.

So don't let your Veterinarian tell you that they cannot send blood, x-rays
or anything else out to a specific place.
Do some research, find out what labs are known to handle some diseases
especially. It takes a little effort on the part of the Techs but it is
usually well worth that and the money.
Many dog foods that are the most familiar to us are manufactured under the
huge umbrellas of Mars (candy)and Nestle's/Purina. If you want to know
about your dog food there are a couple of really excellent websites-- the
Food Advisor is one and Poisoned Pets is another.
I have no interest in promoting this stuff other than giving people a
heads-up as to who is actually doing what.
