[Dailydrool] Pacing in an older dog

Hi Sally,I don't have a whole lot of helpful advice but we have the same issue with our epileptic basset Rooney during the post-seizure stage.  He constantly paces, is wide-eyed, whines, has the hoarse bark, etc.  It used to last a day, then 3 days, but after his last seizure it lasted 6.  So I know what you're witnessing is heartbreaking and my heart goes out to you.Valium worked for us initially but Rooney has built up a tolerance rather quickly so be advised you may run into the same issue.
Here are the other things we have tried/are trying:
Thundershirt (mixed results)Fish oil supplements (for supposed cognitive benefits)Rescue RemedyRescue Sleep (both from Amazon--haven't had to use yet)Benadryl (also to try to make him sleepy--no success for us)
Phenobarbital (for after seizure so this might not be an option for you and we haven't had to use it yet but the effect it should have is to make him sleepy)
You might also want to look into sundowner syndrome in dogs and see if some sort of light therapy might help?  Just a thought.  Best of luck to you on this, I know it is so hard to see Browser in that state, again my heart goes out to you.
Kara B.

Our Browser just turned 14 and has times he paces around and cannot settle
down.  We take him for short walks to try to settle him down.  Our vet has
prescribed 2.5 mg. of valium once in the morning and then before bedtime.
He eats very well and sleeps through the night.

It is so painful to see Browser so restless and at times shaking from
anxiety.

Our vet says he is suffering from cognitive dysfunction.  Fortunately, all
of his blood tests have been normal for his age.  He also has developed a
very hoarse bark and x-rays of his throat and chest have been normal.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Update from Mariah, warrior princess

Day 2 of the siege of Bassetfell.  The barbarians are still within the walls of the castle.  The ceasefire is holding for now, but there is a new figure in mix--King Dad ( who brought the beasts here to begin with).  The foreigners, Lord and Lady Barkalot have alienated the King by, well, barking a lot. The peace is uneasy.  We Bassetfell knights have taken up positions on the human bed with the Queen and are awaiting reinforcements from Chicago.  Mariah

Well..... ......................................um
We seem to be.....uh....in jail.
Everything was just fine, I summoned Uber and we managed to convey to the
driver that we needed the airport.
It was very busy there. A lot of Humans. Many of them pointed and laughed
when we rushed through the terminal dragging our suitcases the rude things.
Our Gate was like thousands of miles away.
On the way we went under some ropes and stuff that were strung like
everywhere probably to keep the Humans from stampeding to the boarding
gates. Anyway Suddenly we were GRABBED by several very large human males
who began roaring at us in a most unpleasant way and they had a dog, too
who kept staring at Doc with the nastiest look and poor Doc trying hard to
stare back but I could see one of his back legs trembling just a tiny bit,
I would have just laid down and wept if he had stared at me that way, so
nasty!
And they took our suitcases and opened them and then the trouble really
started because I had antlers in mine and Doc had a toy rat and Conley had
part of his dinner.
So anyway we were told we were probably TERRORISTS and they were going to
put us in TERRORJAIL whatever that is and I wept and wept and Conley
snarled at them and Doc tried not to let them touch him and then LIKE A
MIRACLE!! The MotherPerson!!! And we went home, oh so happy to be HOME I am
sorry Mariah: we tried....
Sad Love from Merta Lou, Professional Lady Basset and Failed World
Traveler. Good Luck to you you are on your own again....

'Tis I, the warrior princess Mariah.

The siege of Bassetfell has ended. We are victorious.  A message came this afternoon by phone.  I did not overhear the conversation but surely the news must have been of powerful armies setting forth from the North--Chicago--on their way to assist us under the leadership of Lady Merta Lou.  I can think of no other explanation. King Dad took the call.  An infusion of courage. Not long after the phone call, our valiant King Dad and Queen Mom drove off the barbarians (literally, in two cars, one with air crates, and one with monster dogs).  They returned empty handed and triumphant.  I understand that the barbarians are now in the belly of a huge silver dragon winging its way across the seas to San Francisco.  Long live Bassetfell.  PW. MAriah

Dear Pw.  Mariah-

I thinks you should make friends wit da in invaders. Iffen you are nice, they will tell their humans after their flight. Guessing massive treats would be remitted in gratitude. Besides, the pictures of you with the big mutts would be adorable.

Doodle=mutt, but they sound kinda nice.

Tunes .....company? Can I Woof em before my nap?
Rusty......nap.
Thinking of Sydney B at the bridge Woofing them because they are not bassets.
